After almost twenty years on the stage, Emily returned to school to complete her Doctor of Musical Arts at the University of Colorado Boulder where she added opera directing and producing to her portfolio.

Director of the Bucknell Opera Theatre, Emily enjoys working on new productions as well as traditional and has made significant developments in the program.   These include, fully staged productions with orchestra and complete production values, the introduction of musical theater productions in conjunction with opera, multiple workshops of new operas by a variety of young composers, and the beginning of an opera education program with a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.

For the 2019/2020 season, Emily will be directing a workshop in NYC of Friday after Friday, with music by Leanna Kirchoff and libretto by Rachel Peters supported by Opera America’s Opera Grants for Female Composers program. As a producer, Emily has put in over a year of work into a week-long program in November at Bucknell University “Dayeinu! Learning from the Holocaust!” Dayeinu! will offer the Bucknell community, central PA community, and regional educators the opportunity to learn how to teach the Holocaust effectively, and how to apply the lessons of the Holocaust to contemporary concerns about rising nationalism and ongoing world conflicts. Musical performances, talks, workshops, and films will be offered to demonstrate how the arts have been used to commemorate, contextualize, and heal from widescale trauma. The week will culminate in a performance directed and produced by Emily of of “Brundibar”, a children’s opera composed in 1939 and performed for the first time in 1942 by the children of the Theresienstadt concentration camp by the Bucknell Opera Theatre.

Emily is excited to be part of a team that applied for an Opera America Female Composer Discovery Grant this past year.  The team was awarded one of eight grants, out of 47 applicants, for two workshop performances of Friday after Friday, by Leanna Kirchoff, with libretto by Rachel Peters and music director Alan Johnson.  The first workshop was at Bucknell in January and the second will be in New York City during fall 2019.  This new opera is based on female Syrian experiences during the Arab spring of 2011.

Other highlights of Emily’s direction and production career include working with such companies as Opera Colorado, Central City Opera, as production manager of the University of Colorado Opera program, Druid City Opera Workshop, and as the recipient of the National Opera Association inaugural Stage Director Internship. Assistant directing credits include, The Rake’s Progress, Florencia en el Amazonas, Carousel, Our Town and The Autumn Orchard
