Bucknell Opera Theatre: Brundibar, Bucknell University

  • Bucknell University 1 Dent Drive Lewisburg, PA, 17837 United States (map)

As part of the week long event, “Dayeinu: Learning from the Holocaust”, the Bucknell Opera Theatre will present Hans Krasa’s opera Brundibar. Directed and Produced by Dr. Emily Martin, Assistant Professor of Music, Director, Bucknell Opera Theatre

Brundibar is a children’s opera composed in 1938 by Jewish Czech composer Hans Krasa. With Nazi laws prohibiting public performance of Jewish art, the work was first performed in a Jewish orphanage in Prague in 1942, with the orphans performing the music. Krasa was then imprisoned in the Theresienstadt concentration camp, coincidentally together with much of the children and staff of the orphanage. The group famously reproduced the opera and first performed it at the Theresienstadt camp in 1943. The production was then offered another 55 times at the camp that following year, as part of a Nazi propaganda campaign to the Red Cross to show prisoners’ quality of life in the camps to visiting observers.

The opera will be performed twice on Nov. 9 at 11:00am and at 6:15pm, at the Weis Center. The 11:00am Family Performance will be preceded by a half hour of storytelling with cookies in the Weis Center Lobby.
